If you’re curious, I comped the first shot, some of the second, the fourth, the ninth and a did little roto work on the 15th.

And hopefully you can understand my frustration (and mad scientist joy).

It’s almost amazing how fast technology moves. I say “almost”, because most of the movement is compensation for previous shortcuts made to achieve cutting edge results.

Four years ago I was using this monster of glass, aluminum, plastic and superglue to shoot with my 35mm lenses on a video camera. Fast forward 1,400 days, and it’s hard to find a 35mm camera that isn’t digital AND shooting video at twice the resolution and framerate of my the camera I was using then.

I know it was unreasonable at the time, but back then all I wished for was a digital 35mm camera that shot at 24frames per second, 16:9 footage. Instead I had to wrestle with aspect ratios (stretching pixels to create the illusion of more), pulldown methods (hiding 24 full frames in 60 half frames, then extracting them) and the incredible feat of a moderately short depth of field. I’ve watched these problems become more and more apparent, then slowly melt away. I’ve been waiting for these days, everything is just about to get very, very good.

After being away from Savannah (and this project) for four months, I managed to find some free time to spend polishing it off.

One of the main things I learned during the Rhythm & Hues compositing apprenticeship was to push as much of the work as you can in compositing. The first problem with the old rendering method I was using was that it didn’t give me enough control when piecing the whole thing together. So once I did a little backtracking and rerendering, I was able to devote time to 2d problem solving for the rest of the issues.

Feels good to press publish on this post, and finally archive this project’s files.
